The term 'Medici Lion' refers to one of a pair of marble statues acquired by the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinando I de' Medici, for his collection at Villa Medici in 1598. A circa 60 BC Villa complex restored by Ferdinando in the Late Renaissance, Mannerist style.
Ferdinando had acquired a 2nd Century marble relief of a lion and comissioned a non-matching but similar copy (a pendant) to be carved by sculptor Flaminio Vacca.
